A quiet room, away from heavy foot traffic, loud noise or other pets, helps the settling-in process considerably. Some reduced appetite or reduced activity in the first day or two is common and not automatically a concern, since travel and a new environment are stressful events for any animal.

The difference shows up in the detail. A generic all-purpose substrate is formulated to be safe and workable across many species with different digging habits, humidity needs and diets, which means it's rarely suited especially well to any one of them. A species-specific system like Beardie Life is built around what one animal actually does in its enclosure: how it digs, how dry or humid its habitat needs to be, and what accessories complement that behaviour, from basking accessories to matched decor.

Strictly speaking, a terrarium originally referred to a planted enclosure built around live vegetation, closer to a small indoor garden than a housing unit for an animal. A vivarium, by contrast, technically refers to any enclosure built to house a living creature, whether that's a Northampton Reptile Centre, amphibian or invertebrate, with or without live planting. In practice, though, UK retailers and keepers use both terms fairly loosely, often depending on regional habit or supplier naming rather than any strict definition.

Temperature and humidity checks matter more in these first 48 hours than at almost any other point, since this is when a keeper finds out whether the vivarium set up before the animal's arrival is actually holding steady under real conditions. Checking thermostat readings against a separate thermometer, ideally at both the warm and cool ends of the enclosure, confirms the setup is doing what it's meant to before the animal has been in it long enough for a problem to become serious.

This doesn't mean every component has to come from the same supplier forever, once a setup is established and a keeper knows what works. But for a first setup in particular, where the cost of getting it wrong is a stressed animal and a return trip to sort it out, one supplier and one checked list tends to be the simpler route.

The main problem with sourcing components separately is compatibility. A heat mat bought from one retailer might not be sized correctly for a vivarium bought from another. A thermostat's probe might not reach the right spot in a taller enclosure. Lighting fittings vary in size and mounting style between manufacturers, and substrate depth requirements differ depending on which enclosure and species combination is being used. None of these mismatches are usually dangerous on their own, but taken together they add up to a setup that never quite works as intended, and working out where a problem sits when everything came from different places is much harder.
