Enclosure space is the second consideration, and it's one that catches a lot of new keepers out. Many species sold small as juveniles need considerably more room as adults, and an enclosure that felt generous at first can become cramped within a year or two. Researching the adult size of a species, and the enclosure dimensions that go with it, before bringing the animal home avoids the costly cycle of upgrading tanks every few months.

Care sheets are one of the most useful tools available to a reptile enclosure setup keeper, setting out the basics of temperature, humidity, diet and enclosure size for a given species in one place. Northampton Reptile Centre publishes care sheets covering species including the Hermann's tortoise, leopard gecko, corn snake and White's tree frog, and they're a sensible starting point for anyone researching a species or double-checking their current setup.

That said, there's a clear line between normal settling-in behaviour and something that needs attention. Prolonged refusal to eat beyond what's typical for the species, laboured breathing, unusual discharge, obvious injury, or any behaviour that seems more than ordinarily distressed are reasons to contact a vet experienced with reptiles straightaway, rather than waiting to see if it resolves on its own.

Running costs are the part most new keepers underestimate. Electricity for heating and lighting runs continuously, bulbs and elements need periodic replacement, and livefood or fresh produce is an ongoing weekly cost rather than a one-off. Taken together, these typically add up to a modest but real monthly outlay, on top of the initial setup, for as long as the animal is kept.

Lifespan varies enormously across the hobby. Some species live for a handful of years, while tortoises and larger lizards can live for decades under good care, potentially outlasting the keeper's current living situation, relationship or career entirely. That's not a reason to avoid longer-lived species, but it is a reason to think about who looks after the animal if circumstances change.
